Educational Mental Health Practitioner 2019

PG Diploma Educational Mental Health Practitioner

The EMHP applications for the September 2019 intake are now closed. For the January 2020 intake, EMHP job advert are expected to go live on NHSJobs.

This programme is a shared initiative between the Department of Education and Department of Health and supports the government’s priority to increase access of mental health and wellbeing support for children and young people. The new Education Mental Health Practitioner (EMHP) role is an exciting opportunity to deliver evidence-based early interventions for children and young people in educational settings in England such as schools and colleges.

This is a full time employment training programme. On completion of this year long programme, trainees will qualify as an Educational Mental Health Practitioner (EMHP). This is a new role where EMHPs will play a key role in promoting emotional well-being in educational settings.  They will work as part of the new Mental Health Support Teams as outlined in Transforming Children and Young People’s Mental Health Provision: a Green Paper.

The EMHP programme trains well-being practitioners to offer low intensity evidence-based interventions for mild to moderate mental health difficulties in educational settings.  This includes group interventions and psychoeducation workshops.

How do I apply?

The EMHP applications for the September 2019 intake are now closed.

For the January 2020 intake, EMHP job adverts are expected to go live on NHSJobs via the different CYP services (NHS, Local Authority or Third Sector).

All trainees will undertake this programme alongside employment in a Mental Health Support Team trailblazer site. N.B. Any students applying for this programme need to also secure a relevant EMHP post with a Mental Health Support Team Trailblazer site that is linked to either UCL or KCL.

Candidates interested in the EMHP programme are advised to regularly monitor the London and South East CYP-IAPT Learning Collaborative web page and NHS jobs (https://www.jobs.nhs.uk) for further information.

For further details, please read UCL’s EMHP Recruitment Pack

Candidates interested in the programme are advised to apply as early as possible due to competition for places.

Careers

On successful completion of training, EMHPs will develop the necessary knowledge and skills to offer low intensity evidence-based interventions for mild to moderate mental health difficulties in educational settings. Following completion of the programme, the expectation is that EMHPs will work in the new Mental Health Support Teams who will provide emotional wellbeing support directly to schools.

Who can apply?

Applicants are required to show evidence of ability to study successfully at postgraduate level and evidence of prior experience working with children and young people is preferred.

Although not essential, it would also be preferable if applicants could demonstrate a broad understanding of mental health and emotional wellbeing issues combined with an ability to form a good helping relationship with children and young people facing such problems.

Further Information

For further information about the programme, including content, structure and fees or to make an application, please visit the UCL website.

Hi, I’m just wondering when the next cohort for 2020 is and when the applications will be live?

Hello! Would just like to know the latest update for the EMHP training programme please?
When is the next cohort for 2020?

Hello, I am applying for the January intake as the jobs are coming out now, however the link they are sending to apply for the course says that the course application deadlines have closed. As the jobs are coming out just now I was unaware of which course to apply too. Is this an error or have I missed cohort 5 (although I have an interview) because of this?

Hi there, I have a question in regards to the January 2020 cohort for Maidstone and Canterbury for the education mental health practitioner. The NHS jobs have gone live but I cannot see a link of find the course online for kings college London. Is anyone able to help me with this?
Many thanks,

Gracie

I missed the London application date as the job was pulled offline earlier than initially stated. Could you let me know if there will be an additional intake before September? This website mentions programmes starting in Jan 2020.

Agree with Imogen. I have been applying to jobs on the NHS portals. Once opportunities go live, you need to apply as soon as you can. They never hold out for more than half a day if it is CYP-IAPT, Assistant Psychologist roles, and I believe this current EMHP role too. They are very competitive. Hope that helps.

Hi, I’ve been applying myself and I currently work for the NHS. If the NHS receive too many applications they have the right to withdraw advert early. Both the London vacancies must have filled the quota, so they have closed applications early prior to their closing date of 2nd July.

Hi, I had emailed an enquiry yesterday about this role as wanted to confirm something before deciding if it was best to apply through UCL or Kings, however after receiving a response this morning with the advert link, by 2pm it had vanished. Any help of how to progress would be really appreciated! Many thanks.

Hi Kate,

I’m very confused as I’ve been trying to apply for this training for months, I saw the advert this morning and intended to apply this evening- however the advert has vanished and the update says ‘vacancy no longer available’.
Seems odd that I have missed this by a matter of hours! Especially when the closing date is end of July.
Could you advise me on who to contact at Anna Freud or Kings college?
Many thanks
Sam

Dear Kate, Do you know when vacancies for the CYP iapt service will be advertised please? Kind Regards, Frances

Hey. I believe it’s all through NHS jobs, as it is an NHS funded trainee role. I think during application on NHS jobs you put your preferences down for the universities you would like to enrol with and if successful they place you on your preferences 🙂

The EMHP course on UCL says that applications opened on 14th June and to apply. I’m a bit confused as I thought we apply on nhs jobs first and then secure the place through the university. Do I apply through UCL first anyway?

Hi Kate,

Thank you for the update! Massive relief ! Will keep a keen eye out!

Thanks,

Imogen

Hello,

There has been slight in the advert going live on NHS jobs – but it is still due to be published soon so keep checking as you have been doing… Sorry for any inconvenience, we appreciate that applicants are waiting, and just want to reassure you all that you haven’t missed it.

Have September applications already been advertised? UCL website states that applications have opened on the 5th June but there isn’t any vacancies on the NHS website yet.

Good evening. I have been holding my breath since January for the Education Mental Health Practitioner training. Just crossing my fingers and praying.

Good Morning

I would like to apply for the educational mental health practitioner training course. I have looked on the NHS jobs site and I am checking on this site everyday. Will the applications for September be posted soon?

thank you very much this post was very useful a i have been trying to apply for this for months now

I am looking at doing something along these lines. I was so wondering if there are courses whilst in employment in a school. I am currently doing a person centered counselling course.
