The PWP programme has changed its name to CWP – Children’s Wellbeing Practitioner – to differentiate the role from adult IAPT. This is the suggested name for the moment, but the national programme welcomes further suggestions.
The CWPs will be trained over the course of a year to offer brief, focused evidence- based interventions for anxiety, low mood and self-harm, and behavioural problems (under close supervision) to young people who wouldn’t otherwise reach thresholds for CAMHS. As such, these new teams of CWP – essentially a new sub-service – will be placed upstream in the pathway in primary care, schools, and the voluntary sector, as well as CAMHS in some areas. The new teams will operate according to CYP IAPT principles.
This first year is a pilot with an evaluation being undertaken to determine whether the model is effective. In London & South East there are 15 sites involved in the programme, each with 4 CWPs. These sites are due to start recruiting CWPs near the start of February and most have already begun the process of identifying staff with the skills both to supervise the brief focused interventions and to develop the new sub-service. The supervisors training will begin at the end of March. As the role extends beyond classic supervision to include line management and implementation of the new initiative, this role is being referred to as ‘CWP Clinical Development Lead’.
The CWP training will begin at the end of April, to coincide with the summer terms in both UCL and KCL from where the training will be delivered. Each site is expected to have a candidate in place by the end of March.
The sites involved in the pilot are as follows:
- Barnet (BEH/PHPH/CCG)
- Bromley Y (Bromley Y/CCG)
- Cambridge & Peterborough (CPFT)
- CHUMs (CHUM CIC/ELFT)
- Hammersmith & Fulham (WLMHT/CCG)
